All Commanders, Gold Cups, and Govt mods used the same serial number sequence. My Series 70 Commander was in the first batch and has the SM prefix along with the old C suffix number sequence without the C. Early in 1970 that was again changed to a prefix of SM but BATF didn't approve it so Colt changed to a new number sequence and a prefix of 70G, 70L, 70S, or a G70 suffix. The serial numbers for the commercial Colt 1911 type pistols originally had a C prefix then in 1950 it was changed to a C suffix. Next time I get set up for photos, I'll take a few of my Commander.Īnother way to determine if a Commander is a Series 70 is the serial number. They specifically list a Series 70 Lightweight Commander and a Series 70 Combat Commander. Besides the Commander in my safe, take a look at page 532 in Fjestad's Blue Book of Gun Values (2007 ed). ![]() Wetidlerjr, Someone led you astray and the guy you quoted is definitely wrong.
